On December 26, 1927, the @altheatre opened its doors for a comedic, albeit silent, showing of The Spotlight.
Fast forward 60 years and patrons of the majestic theatre were neither laughing, nor silent. The theatre had fallen on hard times, bankruptcy talks had begun. Plans were drawn to pave a parking lot on the site of what was once dubbed the "Showplace of the South" by the president of @paramountpics.
Were it not for the love and devotion to "The Mighty Wurlitzer" Organ inside (one of twenty five ever made), the theatre would have seen it's own curtain call. Birmingham Landmarks, Inc. was established and helped raise funds to preserve and restore the great cinema and the "Mighty" organ housed within. In 1993 the State of Alabama recognized these efforts and named the Alabama Theatre the Official Historic Theatre of Alabama.
