High atop Red Mountain, Vulcan stands watch over the Magic City.
Vulcan made his worldwide debut at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exhibition in St. Louis where he was awarded the Grand Prize. He spent the next few years traveling the country from exhibition to exhibition.
Finding his way back to Birmingham, a group of passionate locals came together to bring the iron giant back to life. City officials, Business men and women, civic clubs, and citizens raised money and began preparations for the arrival of the world’s largest cast iron statue.
After years of being built up, torn down, and moving from place to place Vulcan found a home. Aptly situated on the top of Red Mountain, which derived its name from the reddish hue of it’s iron ore rock.
Through this story of triumph, neglect, displacement, and support there is a lesson to be learned:
Sometimes it takes a while to find your place; but when you find it, stand tall and own it. Just like Vulcan has done for nearly one hundred years (but unlike Vulcan, please cover your bum).
