McWane Science Center’s mission is to “spark wonder and curiosity about our world through hands-on science.” This sculpture on the corner of 18th St and 2nd Ave. North does just that.

Linear Motion has demonstrated the principles of mechanical motion for twelve years now. Eighteen independently moving arms feature curved mirrors intended to connect visitors with the skyline of the city. The mirrors move effortlessly because they were designed to be perfectly counterbalanced with large precast concrete blocks.

Passersby can actuate the arms of the 9,000 pound structure by stepping on panels in the sidewalk below; demonstrating that everyone has the potential to move the heaviest of elements.
