Not many people get to appreciate the beauty of the Cahaba Lily. It only grows in Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina.
The window to view it’s unique white bloom is very short - about six weeks in late spring. Each flower blossoms for only 24 hours before it withers away.
Jeopardizing its ephemeral existence, dam construction along its host waterways has wiped out entire populations of the lily. It is now under consideration for protection under the Endangered Species Act.
Because the lily prefers to grow in the middle of swift-moving water bodies, like the Cahaba River, a close-up view can be difficult to obtain.
Using a drone to approach the out of reach flower allows for viewing the beautiful blooms while protecting their already endangered ecosystem.
I captured this image on a manual flight using a DJI Mavic Pro at the Cahaba River Park.
